Yolanda Saldivar, the woman convicted of killing Tejano music superstar, Selena Quintanilla-Perez, will stay in a Texas prison as she continues to serve a life sentence for the 1995 fatal shooting of the young singer at a motel. The Texas Parole Board denied the now-64 year old upon her first request for release, stating she still poses a threat to public safety and the nature of the crime indicated “a conscious disregard for the lives, safety and property of others.”
Selena’s family, including her widower Chris Perez, issued a statement praising the board for its decision: “We are grateful that the Texas Board of Pardons and Paroles has chosen to deny parole for Yolanda Saldívar. While nothing can bring Selena back, this decision reaffirms that justice continues to stand for the beautiful life that was taken from us and from millions of fans around the world far too soon.”
Selena was just 23 years old when she was shot in the back at Days Inn motel in Corpus Christi, Texas on March 31, 1995 by Saldivar, who founded Selena’s fan club and was the manager of the singer’s clothing boutiques until she was fired in March 1995 when money was discovered missing.
